As massive protests erupt, Christian university students publicly share the message of social justice they found in the Old Testament prophet Isaiah.
Christian university students in Chile have been involved in the public debate about the socio-political crisis the country is going through.
Massive protests erupted last week as it was announced that the price of the subway (metro) tickets would go up. It was the “drop that filled the glass”, sources told Evangelical Focus, because other more important issues such as the price of electricity, the lack of quality health services and the low pensions for the elderly were already worrying many.
CHRISTIANS STAND UP IN BUSES
“In this difficult moments we’re going through, we see the injustice in the education and in the health system”, one of the Christians students told other passengers in a bus.
“Government after government there have been injustices, and we don’t see solutions in the short term. This produces anger and frustration, to see so much oppression from those who are in power”, other students who stood up in other buses said as shown in a video posted online by the group Faith and Justice.
“JESUS DENOUNCED INJUSTICE”
As shown in a video on Facebook, the members of the university community in the city of Valparaíso then went on to share a message about the justice and the hope found in the Bible. “Despite we cannot trust the government, there is someone in who we can trust”.
“When Jesus came 2,000 years ago, he denounced the injustice. The Bible has a clear answer to this issue”, one said.
They also used the opportunity to publicly “pray for our politicians, we pray that God confronts their hearts. (…) We pray that they are able to see the pain of the people, to respond to the deep needs that are in the heart of people behind every demonstration”.
“Lord do justice to the elderly, to the children, to those who are ill. We also ask you to everyone who is sitting here. Give us peace, tranquillity, and that in this time, we can trust in you”.
SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE BIBLE
The same Christian students explained the biblical background for their initiative by sharing these verses:
Isaiah 1:17: “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed”
Isaiah 32:17: “The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence for ever”.
Proverbs 11:14: “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisors”.
