Gay designers Dolce and Gabbana: children need “father and mother”

“Life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed. One of them is family”, Domenico Dolce said. Elton John and other LGBT activists have called for a “boycott”.

An interview with famous fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in Italy’s “Panorama” magazine has led to a big controversy online. The Italian pair, who publicly identify themselves as gay, said in one moment of the interview that they “oppose gay adoptions.”

Gabbana said: “Family is not a temporary trend. In family there is a sense of supernatural belonging.”

Dolce added: “It is not us who invented family (…). It is not a matter of religion or social status, there is nothing to add: you are born from a father and from a mother. Or at least it should be like that”.

The designer also said he was “not convinced by what I call chemical offsprings and a rented uterus.”

“LIFE HAS A NATURAL FLOW, IT SHOULD NOT BE CHANGED”

Dolce finally concluded: “I am gay, I cannot have a child. I think that one cannot have everything in life. It is also beautiful to deny yourself some things. Life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed. One of them is family.”

The creators of the Dolce&Gabbana clothing brand were a couple for 23 years and broke up in 2005.

ELTON JOHN: “BOYCOTT THEM”

After the “Panorama” interview went viral, British singer Elton John reacted strongly on his Instagram account:

“How dare you refer to my beautiful children as ‘synthetic’ (…). Shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF - a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children, he wrote.

“Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana”, Elton John added.

DESIGNERS ASK FOR THEIR OPINION TO BE RESPECTED

After the reactions of several LGBT activists on the social networks, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana had to release a statement insisting they were not seeking to judge families that did not have a mother and father.

Dolce said that while his own family was “traditional”, that did not “imply that I don’t understand different ones”. “I was talking about my personal view, without judging other people’s choices and decisions.”

Gabbana said: “We talked about our way of seeing reality, but it was never our intention to judge other people’s choices. We do believe in freedom and love.
