God wants mature people, able to judge and discern correctly.
Few footballers are as world famous as DINO ZOFF. Goalkeeper of the Italian national team more than 100 times, he was a World Cup winner in Spain (1982) when he was over 40 years old.
Some of his rivals had not even been born when he was already playing in the Italian team! Still others were small kids.
Do you know what? It is good to be like children. It is good in relation to trust, understanding, love, absence of malice... but it can also be a great danger. Look carefully at the following verses:
- “I could not address you as spiritual, but as worldly - mere infants in Christ” (1st Corinthians 3: l).
- “But in your thinking, be adults” (1 Corinthians 14:20).
- “Then we will no longer be like infants, tossed back and forth by waves, and blown everywhere by every wind of teaching...” (Ephesians 4:14).
- “Anyone who lives on milk is still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness”. (Hebrews 5:13)
What do you think? When we notice small details and get upset and say: “Look at what they are doing to me!" we are behaving like children.
When we make statements such as: “That person does not speak to me”, “He has done this to me”, “I do not want to do that any more, I am upset”, " we are behaving like children.
When we speak, think, and reason like children, we are demonstrating a lack of spiritual maturity. When somebody comes up with amazing new ideas (remember that crucial discussion regarding how many angels can sit on the head of a pin?) and we believe them, we are behaving like children - even if we are actually 20, 30, 40, 50 or 80 years old.
Because children react that way. They get upset because you take away their toy. They will not speak to you if they think you have done something wrong. They are surprised at everything, the sillier the better.
They pass from utter joy, to being totally upset at an amazing rate. And three hundred times a day! They are unable to discern the good and evil of each situation. They are like children!
And we? How many Christians have stayed like children their whole lives? How many are dependent on statements, discussions, entertainments, etc? How many stop doing things for God because: “he said this”, “she did not speak to me”, “he got mad at me”, “they dropped me”, and similar “spiritual” reasons?
God wants us to stop thinking this way. God wants mature people, able to judge and discern correctly.
