The Swiss Federal Statistical Office recently published the results of its survey on the religious landscape in Switzerland up to 2024.

The data show that the “gradual secularisation” continues, with more people identifying as ‘nones’, or “without religion”. This group now represents 36.8% of the Swiss population, compared to 23% in 2014.

The number of mainline Reformed Protestants and Roman Catholics is declining. While ten years ago they represented 26% and 38% of the population, respectively, by 2026 these figures had fallen to 19% and 30%.

Meanwhile, Jewish (0.2%), Muslim (6%) and other religious communities (1.3%) remain stable, as do ‘other Christian communities’, which include Baptists, Brethren, Charismatics and other independent groups.

The proportion of those evangelical Christians has fluctuated between 5.6% and 5.9% over the last ten years, reaching 6% in 2024. The increase has mainly taken place in French-speaking Switzerland, in the cantons of Vaud and Valais, while in Geneva, the figure is falling.

Gradual decline

Based on a 2025 study, the researchers explained that the decline in religiosity occurs “in three stages: first, a decrease in collective practices; second, a decline in the importance of religion in individual lives; and finally, the abandonment of affiliation with a religious community”.

The reason most often given by ‘nones’ was “never having had faith or having lost it” (49%), followed by “disagreement with the community's positions” (18%).

Church attendance and prayer

The study also shows that 49% of the Swiss population never attends religious services, with only 8% going at least once a week.

In terms of prayer, 47% never pray, while 20% pray daily and 19% do so at least once a month.
