4.2 million refugees from Ukraine in the EU

According to the latest official data released by Eurostat, 1.1 million “beneficiaries of temporary protection” from Ukraine live in Germany alone, closely followed by Poland, which borders the war-torn country, with 990,000.

The Czech Republic hosts another 385,000 people.

These three countries alone host 60% of all Ukrainian war refugees in countries of the European Union.

The figures, collected in November 2024, show that “adult women make up almost half (44.9%) of the beneficiaries. Children accounted for almost one-third (32.0%), while adult men comprised less than a quarter (23.1%) of the total”.

Austria, the Netherlands and Lithuania are the countries that have taken in the most unaccompanied children (minors).

After the Russian invasion, Christian organisations in several countries built platforms to find homes for Ukrainian refugees. Evangelical Focus has told some of the stories of families who found temporary homes with Christians in France, the UK and Italy.

While many evangelical churches remain very active in Ukraine, others have come under attack on the front line. Evangelical movements in Europe such as the European Evangelical Alliance, the Lausanne Europe Movement, or the European Leadership Forum have expressed their condemnation of the Russian invasion on 24 February 2022.

Some Russian Christian leaders have also called on President Vladimir Putin to put an end to the violence.
