The bodies of 34 children attending a Bible camp in a remote northern region of the island of Sulawesi (Indonesia) have been found, the Red Cross confirmed.

A mudslide engulfed the Christian church, rescuers said. “A total of 34 bodies were found by the team”, Indonesia Red Cross spokeswoman Aulia Arriani told AFP Tuesday.

86 students had initially been reported missing from the Bible camp at the Jonooge Church Training Centre in Sigi Biromaru district.

1,200 CONFIRMED DEATH AFTER QUAKE AND TSUNAMI

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake and tsunami devastated central Sulawesi on Friday evening, local time.

Later on Monday, four more quakes of magnitude 5.0 and 6.0 hit the region.

MASS BURIALS

Authorities said on Tuesday that the death toll rose to 1,200.

Indonesian authorities are scrambling to find survivors and provide shelter, food and water to those who have lost everything.

Mass burials have begun in Sulawesi, and it is believed that hundreds of bodies could still be found under the mud.

As many as 191,000 need urgent help in Indonesia after the quake, the United Nations said. According to the Red Cross, 60% of the buildings in the city of Palu have been destroyed.

Dozens of aid organisations (including several Christian entities) are trying to send humanitarian help to the island, but several cities and towns have been difficult to reach.

Christians are a minority in Indonesia, the world's biggest Muslim-majority country.
