On 10 March, the President of the Republic of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa Azín, signed a public commitment to the protection of children in Ecuador.

The commitment was publicly signed on 10 March 2025, after a meeting Noboa held with representatives of evangelical Christians church and organisations (including indigenous evangelical leaders), of the Catholic Church, and of the Orthodox Church.

President Noboa promised to guarantee the right of parents to educate their children in accordance with their faith and convictions, without ideological impositions from the State.

In the document, the Ecuadorian government also says it will  not include gender ideology perspectives in educational texts and institutions, nor to allow sex changes for minors.

Previous controversies

The government has not been free of controversy regarding issues involving children.

On 16 February, the political party Comprehensive Front for the Metapolitical Regeneration of the State and Society (Firmes) made a public statement on its X account, in which it accused Harold Burbano, Minister of Economic and Social Inclusion (MIES), of being a “promoter of transgender infancy”, and called for his dismissal.

Burbano responded to the accusations by denying that he promoted transgender children. He pointed out that his position is “in favour of human dignity and the defence of the most vulnerable”, and that there were no national, international, logical or ethical legal bases that call for the hormonisation of children and adolescents.

The following day, 17 February, the Minister of Education, Alegría Crespo, stated in a video posted on social media platform X that she would not implement any action based on gender ideologies.

This came about because the Constitutional Court issued a ruling in which the Ministry of Education had to develop protocols for the accompaniment of LGBTIQ+ minors in schools to prevent discrimination. The case was opened after the complaint filed by the family of a Spanish trans girl who was a victim of discrimination at a school in the city of Salinas.
