‘No God But Theirs’ (a one-hour documentary in English) tells the case of Melitopol, a Russian-occupied city in southeastern Ukraine where Christians responded to the invasion with public prayer and mutual support.
A one-hour documentary based on the investigation of war crimes against Christians by Russia collects testimonies and images of churches that responded with public prayer and peaceful resistance to the invasion.
The daily news outlet The Kyiv Independent, with tens of thousands of followers on social media, published a documentary on 29 May in which it interviews evangelical pastors, Orthodox clergy and Catholics priests.
The documentary is titled No God but Theirs, in reference to Russia's religious justification for the war, which has even led the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church to spiritually justify the death of soldiers.
It was filmed in Melitopol, a city in the south-east of Ukraine that fell under Russian occupation. There, Christians gathered to pray for Ukraine in the city’s central square for 130 consecutive days.
Later, church buildings were confiscated and Christian leaders falsely accused of subverting the new Russian rule.
“Melitopol has long been a place of religious and cultural diversity, where Christian churches — including vibrant Protestant communities — coexisted peacefully”, say the authors. “But after Russia’s full-scale invasion, everything changed”.
One of Melitopol’s churches, the Pentecostal Word of Life, had over 500 members, as his pastor recounts in this report. He was the first Christian leader who saw military cars and masked soldiers appear at his home.
“As occupation took hold, churches became more than places of worship — they became pillars of resilience. Locals gathered for daily prayers in the city’s central square. Russia responded with a crackdown”.
