“Chaplains are often the bearers of hope [...] it is about living the evidence of faith in the army”, they say.
Fifty- four army chaplains from Swiss evangelical churches met in Bern on 4 February with the head of the Swiss military chaplaincy, captain Samuel Schmid.
For the past five years, the Swiss Evangelical Alliance (SEA-RES) and its affiliated church unions, along with other national evangelical associations, have been working with the military chaplaincy as official partners.
That leads to this meeting, which was the first of its kind and aimed to provide a platform for ongoing training and networking for chaplains from evangelical churches in Switzerland.
Samuel Schmid underlined the important role of military chaplains, who “are often the bearers of hope, particularly for recruits in the early stages of their military service”.
“It is about living the evidence of faith in the army”, added Daniel Rohner, chief of staff of the Army Chaplaincy Service.
Both stressed that the closer chaplains are to members of the armed forces and the more they are involved in military life, the more effective their support is in contributing to the “resilience of the people who call on them”.
Participants discussed numerous case studies in group work, in order to “enabled participants to gain confidence in their duties as chaplains”. Particular attention was paid to the question of how roles in military service differ from those in the pastoral field.
The RES plans to set up this type of training on a regular basis. The first collaboration contract was signed in 2020, when they and the German-speaking umbrella organisation of free churches, Freikirchen.ch signed a partnership agreement with the army chaplaincy.
