Spanish pastors, leaders, representatives of regional evangelical councils, fraternities of pastors, denominations and ministries shared time and space with political representatives and authorities at the traditional annual Prayer Breakfast.

Convened by the Federation of Evangelical Religious Entities of Spain (FEREDE), the event took place on 1 June in Madrid, and was an opportunity to pray for (and with) political representatives of different parties and government authorities.

Pray for the authorities and become known

The event was presided by Carolina Bueno, executive secretary of FEREDE, who emphasised the aim of “doing what is good, blessing and praying for all the authorities, political leaders, representatives of public institutions and other organisations, and in a very special way, for those of you who are with us here today”.

“We do this because it is what the Bible, the source of authority for those of us who are Christians, teaches us”, she added.

Another goal “is that you get to know us, that you know a little about the reality of Protestantism and the evangelical community in our country, which is far from the distorted and sensationalist image that the media sometimes give of us”, pointed out Bueno.

After the welcome words of the executive secretary, the pastor and president of the Evangelical Council of Madrid, Francisco Sánchez, said a prayer; and the president of FEREDE, Esteban Muñoz de Morales, shared a biblical reflection in which he underlined the spiritual principles of the Word of God for politics and good government.

The band Papel Maché was in charge of the musical moments that were greatly enjoyed by the audience.

“Institutional loyalty, collaboration and critical yet cordial dialogue”

Afterwards, evangelical representatives prayed in short turns for the local and regional politicians from PSOE, PP and VOX panties who attended, and for the institutions represented, such as the Pluralism and Coexistence Foundation, regional governments, city councils, political parties and universities.

Bueno closed the event stressing that the evangelicals “offer you our complete institutional loyalty and our active collaboration in all those initiatives aimed at building a cohesive, just and democratic society”, as well as “a critical yet cordial dialogue even about those issues that are contrary to the values of the kingdom of God,as long as our independence and freedom of conscience are respected”.

“We will continue to ask God to bless you and help you to hear his voice calling you to the abundant life that is offered to us all in Jesus Christ, and to "offer you our personal help if you ever need it”. she said.

Pastor Samuel Vázquez, national coordinator of Spain We Pray for You, closed the event with a prayer.

Second part of the event

After that first part, and some minutes of informal conversation among all the participants, the second part of the event began, with a time of communion and sharing, which concluded with the celebration of the Lord's Supper.

Then there was a time of prayer for different needs, such as workers and places to reach; the church and the extension of the kingdom of God; the youth; and personal needs of the attendees.

After the celebration of the Lord's Supper, Carolina Bueno and the vice-president of FEREDE, Daniel Rodríguez, closed the event with a few words and a prayer, respectively.

The evangelical pastor and painter Linwood Berry Vanhorn, presented one of his paintings, which he gave to FEREDE as a gift to the evangelical community in Spain.

“This painting pays tribute to the people, churches and charities that show the love of Christ in social action in Spain. A social action that, unlike that of secular NGOs, is inspired by prayer that  inspires vision, nourishes compassion, and produces action”, he said.
