Christian party in Denmark on the brink of disappearing

The Social Democrat have won the parliamentary election in Denmark with 27.5% of the vote, and Prime Minister Mette Frederikssen will continue to lead the government.

What is not sure is which coalition partners she will choose, having options on the left and in the centre of the political spectrum. “In Denmark, we have for many years been used to progress. Now we face hardship, and with war in Europe, energy scarcity, inflation and climate challenges, the crises combine”, she said, according to Euronews, as she advocated to unite as many political forces in the new government as possible.

Among these will not be the Christian Democratic Party of Denmark, which suffered a heavy defeat getting only 0.5% of the vote, down from 1.7% in 2019.

The Christian party earned no representation in the national parliament, and could leave give up their efforts to remain visible on a national scenario, according to CNE.news.

Founded in the 1970s as a pro-life movement, the Kristendemokraterne (KD) had their best result in 1975, with 5.3% of the vote and 6 seats in the parliament of 179.

Despite at times being close to reach the two per cent threshold, the party has not been able to win representation in parliament since 2005.

Sources of the KD now say they would plan to focus on regional politics.
