Frances Luttikhuizen, an English Philology lecturer, writer, and researcher of Protestantism, died in Barcelona in July. Her family held the farewell cereomny in privacy.
Frances Luttikhuizen, born in the United States but based in Spain since the 1950s, made an important contribution to the dissemination and knowledge of Protestant history in Spain, collaborating with various initiatives to recover the memory and Protestant authors of the 16th century.
She was highly respected and recognised among evangelical churches and organisations in Spain, where she gave many lectures, classes and interviews with evangelical and secular media on her field of work.
Frances was married to David Estrada, with whom she shared a passion for research into the Protestant Reformation and with whom she worked in many projects.
Her main fields of interest included the history of translation, linguistic awareness, Cervantes' Novelas ejemplares, and the Spanish Reformation.
Among Luttikhuizen’s most important works is the book España y la Reforma Protestante (Spain and the Protestant Reformation, 2017), of which Spanish theologian José Moreno Berrocal has said it is “a work that represents a before and after in the studies of the Reformation in Spain (...) There is a wealth of data and ideas that will make this book a constant and obligatory reference work”.
The last work she coordinated was published in Catalan, Un día de fúria (2020), looking at the episode of the assault on the headquarters of the Inquisition in Barcelona at the beginning of the 19th century, in which she analyses the connections of this event with Protestants and liberals of that age.
In addition to these and other published works, Luttikhuizen wrote articles for magazines and the press. The latest issue of the theology journal of the Spanish Evangelical Alliance, Alétheia, includes an article she co-authored on the Queen of Navarre, Jeanne d'Albret.
In her research, Frances Luttikhuizen often focused on the important and often forgotten role of women in the Protestant Reformation.
