According to the results of the new National public opinion survey by the Centre for Public Studies (CEP), 17% of Chileans define themselves as evangelical.

The survey showed that 76% of respondents say they believe and have always believed in God, which is a slight decrease compared to the 2018 survey, when they were 80%.

Stability among evangelicals, decline among Catholics

The CEP asked about the religion in which respondents were raised, finding that 74% were Catholic, 18% Evangelical, 6% none, 1% Mormon, 1% Jehovah's Witness, 1% other religion or creed, and 1% don't know or no answer. None of the respondents identified as Muslim or Jew.

Participants also responded to the question: "Which religion or church do you currently belong to or feel closest to?", with 48% saying they are Catholic, 17% Evangelical and 4% other.

A strong 31% consider themselves agnostic or atheist.

The number of evangelical believers coincides with the number of those who were raised in this faith, the evangelical faith remains stable in quantitative terms.

However, among the 74% of citizens raised in the Catholic faith, only 48% of adults said they maintain the same faith.

Church attendance

Furthermore, participants were asked how often they attend church services, without considering special events such as weddings and funerals.

12% said they attended church at least once a week, 11% up to three times a month, 21% at least once a year and 44% stated that they never attend. The survey did not differentiate between faiths.

National public opinion survey

The National public opinion survey was carried out between August and September 2024, among 1,482 residents nationwide aged 18 and over, who were interviewed face-to-face on the basis of a structured questionnaire.

Respondents were asked about their opinions on politics and economics, trust in institutions, their level of life satisfaction, the family and the social outburst of 2019, among other topics.
