Married people have better health than those who are single, especially after the age of 40, according to a study by the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Researchers concluded that in marriage each partner has a role making sure their spouse is caring about his/her health and a married couple is more likely to have a health insurance.
Researchers have sought to distinguish whether there was more predisposition to marriage by people with innate better health. Evolutionary biology studies suggest that some physical and psychological traits which arouse attractive in the opposite sex, such as symmetry, are associated with good quality of the genes and a good health, which favors reproductive success.
However, the study concludes that health differentials are not related to marriage until a person is around 40 years old. It is from that age that marriage begins to appear as a positive factor for the health of its members.
Married people are more likely to get regular preventive checkups and adopt healthier habits (such as not smoking) thanks to the care of his partner.
