Call to Prayer for the Dutch general election

The European Evangelical Alliance warns about “the growing phenomenon of angry, polarising, post-truth rhetoric that is infecting political debate in many nations, including the Netherlands.”

Dutch general elections will take place next Wednesday, March 15. Twenty-eight parties seek to get elected, making it difficult for Dutch voters to choose.

That is why the European Evangelical Alliance (EEA) calls on Europe’s Evangelical community, to pray for the people of the Netherlands as they go to the ballot box.

“NO NEUTRAL ABOUT OUR MISSION AS CHRISTIANS AND CITIZENS”

“The EEA is neutral when it comes to party politics but it is not neutral regarding our responsibilities and mission as both Christians and citizens”, the organisation points out in the Call of prayer issued.

The “growing phenomenon of angry, polarising, post-truth rhetoric that is infecting political debate in many nations, including the Netherlands” is alarming, the EEA says.

“FEAR, ANGER, MISTRUST AND HATRED DIVIDE NATIONS”

The European Alliance “especially condemns irresponsible language that dehumanises particular communities or turn them into scapegoats.”

“Fear, anger, mistrust and sometimes hatred are dividing the nation”, they add.

A CALL TO PRAY

“We pray in faith to the King of Kings who works out His Kingdom purposes beyond the failings and confusion of human beings”, the text says .

The EEA asks European evangelicals to pray for:

-  Truth to be both valued and revealed and for voters to consider the common good

-  The rejection of hatred, intolerance or violence towards anyone and encouraged by anyone;

-  Christians to use their vote wisely and to engage with hope and truth in debate with family; friends and colleagues;

-  Politicians of hope, courage, peace and integrity to be elected into positions of influence.

 Faith to be given a voice (the campaign slogan of the three Christian parties).

The Call to Prayer concludes by quoting Romans 15:13, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
