At least seven students and one teacher died and 6 children are in severe condition. President Putin has ordered to revise Russian gun regulations.
At least 8 people, seven eighth-grade students and a teacher, have died and around 30 are wounded, after a gunman attacked a school Tuesday morning in the Russian city of Kazan, officials reported.
“The terrorist has been arrested, he is 19 years old and was officially registered as a gun owner. Other accomplices haven’t been established, an investigation is underway”, pointed out Rustam Minnikhanov, governor of the Tatarstan republic in a press release. The shooter was a former student of the school.
Authorities immediately put security measures in place in all schools in Kazan, which is the capital of the Muslim-majority region of Tatarstan, located 700 kilometres East of Moscow. They have also announced a day of mourning on Wednesday to honor the victims of the shooting.
Footage shared on social media shows children jumping from windows to escape. Russia’s RIA news agency reported that two of the children died after jumping from a second-floor window. Furthermore, six of the children hospitalised after the attack are in intensive care with severe conditions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to families of the victims, ordered a plane with medics, psychologists and equipment to be dispatched to Kazan, and asked the head of Russia’s National Guard to revise gun regulations in light of the attack.
