The recently announced worldwide fifth season of the series The Chosen shows that there is a renewed interest in biblical stories.

An example of this is Prime Video's upcoming series House of David. The platform has already released the first trailer of the series, which will be available worldwide on 27 February.

The series is based on an idea by Jon Erwin, who created House of David with Jon Gunn. While it is not related to The Chosen franchise (which will soon expand to other Bible stories), its creator, Dallas Jenkins, has been a special consultant to Wonder Project, producer of the series.

The series follows the rise of a young boy who will be anointed by God as king by the prophet Samuel, after King Saul fell out of favour due to his behaviour.

As the trailer shows, the central event will be the war with the Philistines and the fight with their champion, the giant Goliath.

“The most renowned and celebrated king of Israel”

According to the official synopsis, “House of David tells the story of the ascent of the biblical figure, David, who eventually becomes the most renowned and celebrated king of Israel. The series follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. At the direction of God, the prophet Samuel anoints an unlikely, outcast teenager as the new king. As Saul loses his power over his kingdom”.

“David finds himself on a journey to discover and fulfill his destiny, navigating love, loss, and violence in the court of the very man he’s destined to replace. As one leader falls, another must rise”, it adds.

“Can a stone change the course of history?”

“Can a stone change the course of history?” begins a voiceover at the start of the trailer, which simultaneously shows David picking up a stone from the river.

Then Goliath appears, a gigantic and terrible warrior who calls Israel's army ‘cowards’, asking them to send their ‘champion’ to face him in single combat.

The confrontation with Goliath is only part of David's journey, which begins as a humble shepherd overshadowed by his older brothers whom God chooses as the next king through the prophet Samuel.

“God does not see what man sees, he sees in the heart. And you have the heart of a lion”, he says.

Michael Iskander leads the cast

Michael Iskander stars in the series as David. Joining him in the main cast are Martyn Ford as Goliath, Stephen Lang as Samuel, Ali Suliman as Saul, Ayelet Zurer as Ahinoam.
