Netflix tells Moses’ story in a documentary

The three-part series is a Turkish-American production. It blends dramatic reenactments with insights from theologians and historians. “What really drew us in was the mystery of Moses’ inner life, his struggles with his own identity, his self-doubt”, the creators say.

Streaming platform Netflix is launching a documentary about Moses on 27 March, called Testament: The Story of Moses.

The three-part series tells the complete story of Moses as it is told in the Bible, from his discovery in a basket by Pharaoh's daughter to the ten plagues and the Israelites' exodus from Egypt.

Theologians and historians insights

The episodes, each around 80 minutes long, are entitled The Prophet, The Plagues and The Promised Land, and “chronicles Moses' remarkable life as a prince, prophet and more” through dramatic reenactments and “insights from theologians and historians”, announces the streaming platform.

Among the over 12 experts are Rabbi Maurice Harris, author of the book Moses: A Stranger Among Us; Shady Nasser, professor of Middle Eastern Languages and Civilisations at Harvard University, Carol Meyers, professor emeritus at Duke University, and Tom Kang, lead pastor of a nondenominational Christian church in Los Angeles.

English actor Charles Dance is the narrator and Israeli actor Avi Azulay portrays Moses, with Mehmet Kurtuluş as Pharaoh.

Turkish-American production

The documentary was created by Emre Şahin and Kelly McPherson from the Turkish-American production company Karga7 Productions.

“Anyone who has seen The Ten Commandments as a child was well aware of the more epic elements of the tale. What really drew us in was the mystery of Moses’ inner life, his struggles with his own identity, his self-doubt, his humanness”, pointed out Sahin and McPherson.
