The uncertainty that surrounded Mary and Joseph when Jesus was born shows us what kind of God was coming to be with us. In a stable, a child arrived to identify with our helplessness.
Some in Europe today wonder what is the point of celebrating Christmas any more. Why a Christian celebration about ‘salvation’ when many no longer trust in such a God?
Most have reasonably good jobs (or a pension). Per capita income is better than in other parts of the world. We can elect our rulers and our children have a formal education. We have insurance for the unexpected and we have plenty of entertainment and leisure options.
We control our lives.
Or so we think, until it all goes wrong. It may be the sudden loss of a job. It may be the death of someone we love. It may be a terrorist attack. Or a natural disaster.
This 2024, we in the Evangelical Focus have lived closely the ‘DANA’ floods that put the lives of more than 100,000 people on hold, here in Valencia (Spain).
Houses destroyed, tens of thousands of private vehicles piled up in the streets, businesses washed away, schools closed for months. And worst of all, more than 200 people died.

What do we do when a storm takes away part of our lives? Where do we turn for help?[/destacate]
After the shock and the first few days of urgent reaction to the chaos, an uneasy sense of uncertainty about the future has arisen in each of us. What will our daily lives be like from now on? Will we be able to recover what we have lost? Where do we turn for help?
In other words, what do we do when a storm takes away part of our lives?
At Christmas, we understand that God looks us in the eye, touches us, acts in the midst of our miseries. But Jesus also does heal us in order to offer us an immovable security.
Stability in the midst of life’s unexpected events.
“A Saviour is born to us”, say the angels, whom they had prophesied as “the mighty God”.
A strong God. Jesus would later in His life encourage those who listened to Him to build the house (our life) on the rock. On the good news He was bringing.
This hope from God is available to each one of us, also in our Europe that has the illusion of having everything under control. He is the salvation we need.
Those of us in the Evangelical Focus team know that it is this Jesus on whom we want to build our lives and our projects. If we have Him, we lack nothing.
We wish you, from the bottom of our hearts, a very Merry Christmas!
