Forward Cody Gakpo, from The Netherlands, expressed his Christian faith in the football match that gave Liverpool F.C. the 2024-2025 Premier League title.

Gapkp removed his shirt after scoring Liverpool's third goal against Tottenham at Anfield, revealing a white vest which read: “I belong to Jesus”. The vest resembled that of AC Milan Brazilian player Kaka, when he celebrated the Italian team's victory over Liverpool in the 2007 Champions League final.

After his celebration, Gakpo was shown a yellow card by the referee, but the Football Association (FA) confirmed in a letter on 30 April that no further action will be taken.

The FA also reminded Gapko that “players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer’s logo”.

Liverpool won 5-1, a result that secured the club’s 20th Premier League title.

“God guided every step of this journey”

The 25-year-old Dutch forward is very outspoken about his faith, and often shares Bible verses on his Instagram profile.

“God guided every step of this journey, and I am beyond grateful”, he wrote after the victory against Tottenham.

Some time ago, he told Helden magazine: “I try to read the Bible every day, I pray every day, I like to go to church and I read many books about the faith”.

Bible study at Qatar World Cup 2022

During the Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022, Gapko led a Bible study for their teammates, along with another star of the national team, Memphis Depay.

Approximately 15 players atended the Christian gathering, in which they read Bible verses and pray for each other's struggles and pressures as they progressed in the football World Cup.
