I go for a walk in order to pray but I put pressure on myself and talk to myself:
‘Man, Alain, it would be better if I got on with my work, I’ve got so much to do.’
And God, butting into our conversation:
‘This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength…”’
And the next part, which people often forget to read:
‘…but you would have none of it. You said, “No, we will flee on horses.” Therefore you will flee! You said, “We will ride off on swift horses.” Therefore your pursuers will be swift!
A thousand will flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five you will all flee away, till you are left like a flagstaff on a mountaintop, like a banner on a hill.’
(Isaiah 30, verse 15-17, lovely definition of stress, isn’t it?)
At that very moment a friend sends me the same verse by email (falling into the category: just in case I didn’t quite get it…)
So this day and the following ones: I take the time. Sorry that my reflection may appear to be on the simplistic side but: The work was done even better than usual (someone even came to help me with the accounts) and, what is more, in peace and quiet. Time with Jesus is priceless and is within everyone’s means…
