Spain dissolves parliament and calls general elections

President Pedro Sánchez brings forward the election to 29 November. As in previous elections, the Evangelical Alliance will produce a guide to “vote with an informed opinion”.

The Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Monday the dissolution of the Spanish Parliament and the calling of general elections for Sunday, 29 November.

The decision had previously been notified to King Felipe VI and brings forward the election date, as the parliamentary term — which began following the July 2023 elections — is cut short after three years.

Sánchez had previously stated on several occasions that he intended to see the term through to 2027.

Speaking from La Moncloa, Sánchez acknowledged “mistakes” and unresolved issues, including inequality, public services, and access to housing. He argued that in order to achieve “more”, he needs to “renew and broaden the support of the people”, calling for a “much broader” parliamentary majority.

The Socialist presidential candidate presented the election as a choice between continuing with the current coalition government, or making way for a coalition of the right and far right, which he accused of wanting to “repeal and cut” rights and freedoms.

This announcement follows last Friday's parliamentary defeat of the housing decrees. In his speech, the president barely mentioned it.

An extraordinary Council of Ministers meeting is set to approve the dissolution decree on Monday, which will be published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) tomorrow.

The election campaign will begin on 13 November and end on 27 November. Saturday 28 November will therefore be a day of reflection.

AEE: “Vote with an informed opinion”

As on previous occasions, the Spanish Evangelical Alliance (AEE) and its group on participation in public life will analyse the various electoral programmes and proposals.

In June 2023, just before the last elections, the evangelical organisation – which will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2027 – published the guide ‘Vote with an informed opinion’, which presented an analysis of ten key issues.

According to the project coordinator, X. Manuel Suárez, the guide “never gives any indication of how to vote. It just shows the current situation, what biblical criteria we can find for each of the aspects of political life, and some questions that help us to discern where the wisest way to vote may be”.

The AEE has confirmed that it is working on producing similar resources to help evangelicals carry out this analysis, in light of the various proposals to be put forward in the coming weeks by the main political players.
