Zurich bans the March for Life from the city centre

“It is a disproportionate restriction on freedom of assembly and expression”, say the organisers. The March will take place in Zurich-Oerlikon.

The Swiss city of Zurich has not allowed the ‘Marsch fürs Läbe’ (March for life) to be held in the city centre for the sixth time in a row.

They claim that their decision is based on security concerns.the but the organisers point out that “anyone who wants to ensure safety must curb the source of aggression, not restrict those who are peacefully exercising their fundamental constitutional rights”.

The Marsch fürs Läbe organising committee has announced that they will appeal the decision, but this year’s event will take place in Zurich-Oerlikon neighborhood, on 19 September.

“In a constitutional state, threats of violence must not determine who is allowed to express their opinion in public spaces. Otherwise, the right to demonstrate is determined by those who are prepared to prevent it”, said the organisers.

In a statement recently published, they define the measure as a “disproportionate restriction on freedom of assembly and expression”, and stress that public visibility is an essential part of those freedoms, and a venue in Oerlikon would attract significantly less public attention.

The organisers also complain that no other demonstration with a national focus is relocated to the outskirts of the city.

Together for Life

The theme of the March 2026 is “Together for Life”, and it will focus on the perspectives of men affected by an unexpected pregnancy or an abortion.

“While the public debate often emphasises women’s freedom of choice, the need for support felt by many women, as well as the experiences of the fathers involved, are given too little consideration”, they underline.

For the organisers, “many women feel alone when faced with an unplanned pregnancy and would like more support, particularly from the father of their child”.

At the same time, “there are men who find abortion a traumatic experience, the consequences of which often only become apparent years later”, they conclude.
