Austria’s Frank Hinkelmann leaves the post after 12 years. The new chair is director of Word of Life Europe and takes the reins after the EEA members meeting in Montenegro.
The European Evangelical Alliance, which brings together national alliances and related pan-European Christian entities, announced at its members meeting in Bar (Montenegro) that it has a new president.
Andreas Wenzel, from Germany, will now chair the EEA board, after eight years as a member of the continental leadership team. He is currently director of Word of Life Europe and has also served on the board of the German Evangelical Alliance.
The outgoing president of the EEA, Frank Hinkelmann, an Austrian, is finishing his task after 12 years (three terms).
The handover took place during the EEA’s hybrid 2025 members meeting in Montenegro, which “brought together the EEA Board and the EEA Staff on-site as well as evangelical leaders from across Europe virtually”, a press release said.
The EEA representatives’ series of meetings in Montenegro also included “a meaningful gathering with local pastors to discuss unity, mission, and support for the growing evangelical community in the country”.
According to the EEA, Frank Hinkelmann has shown in his time as chair “a commitment to theological education and to a deepening of the understanding of the history of Evangelicalism, as well as by amplifying the evangelical voice in a diverse continent”.
The EEA will continue to have Connie Main Duarte and Jan Wessels as co-general secretaries, both appointed in 2022.
“We thank Frank for his unwavering dedication and godly wisdom over these 12 years”, said Main Duarte. Quoting Philippians 1:6, she expressed that “Frank’s leadership has been a testament to God's faithfulness in building unity among evangelicals. We are excited to welcome Andreas, whose passion for mission will inspire us all to press forward in faith”.
Jan Wessels said: “Frank’s service has been a blessing, guiding us through challenges with grace and vision”. Drawing from Hebrews 12:1, he added: “We honour his endurance and look forward to Andreas stepping in, bringing fresh energy rooted in Scripture to unite and empower Europe's evangelical family”.
The European Evangelical Alliance seeks to represent 23 million evangelical Christians in Europe, fostering evangelical unity, advocating for religious freedom, and addressing key socio-political issues across the continent.
