Theresa May: “Christianity has an important role to play in Britain”

Representatives of Christian faith communities in the United Kingdom met Prime Minister Theresa May on Shrove Tuesday.

May hosted the event and “expressed her gratitude for the services and faith-inspired projects that make the UK what it is today”, according to the website of the United Kingdom Evangelical Alliance (EAUK).

EAUK’s General Director, Steve Clifford, attended the meeting. He said it was good to hear the Theresa May’s “thoughts regarding the Christian community the Christian faith and our contribution to society as a whole”.

“YOU PROVIDE GUIDANCE TO MILLIONS IN THE UK”

The Prime Minister underlined the “sacrifices of the hard work that many of you do. From the services and ministry in your churches to the comfort and guidance you provide to millions in our country at some of the most difficult moments in their lives.”

Speaking on projects led by Christians both in the UK and in other parts of the world, May said: “We owe you a huge debt of gratitude and, as a Prime Minister on behalf of the whole country, I want t say a very big thank you.”

PEOPLE SHOULD BE ABLE TO “SPEAK ABOUT THEIR FAITH”

“We have a very strong tradition in this country of religious tolerance and freedom of speech, and our Christian heritage is something that we can all be proud of”, May said. “We must continue to ensure that people feel able to speak about their faith, and that absolutely includes faith in Christ.”

The Primer Minister added: “I also believe that Christianity has an important role to play in making Britain a country that works for everyone
