He specialised in reporting about conflicts in underreported regions and did many in-depth interviews. As of 1 January 2025, Soriano begins as a pastor in a church near Barcelona.
Journalist Jonatán Soriano will leave the editorial staff of the Spanish news website Protestante Digital at the end of 2024, after seven years of daily work in this evangelical news platform.
The end of his working period also meant a full stop for his work for Evangelical Focus, where a large part of his work appeared in translation. Evangelical Focus belongs to the Areópago Protestante communication group, as does Protestante Digital.
Soriano, who finished his theology studies at the IBSTE Seminary, will take over the pastorate of Església Llibertat in the city of Sant Boi de Llobregat (Barcelona) from January 2025.
Jonatán is married to Diana, and they are the parents a two-year-old boy.
The Catalan journalist began as a contributor for Protestante Digital in 2015, after finishing his journalism studies. A few years later, in 2017, that collaboration became a daily job that Soriano has carried out with “dedication, excellence and professionalism”, said his teammates.
In addition to interviews, chronicles and reports carried out in person in the region of Catalonia, Soriano specialised in international news coverage. With a great analytical capacity and arduous investigative work, he has reported on current affairs in places such as India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Jordan, Syria, Armenia, Mozambique, Congo, South Africa and Israel. In all these reports, Soriano made an effort to get local contacts, in most cases evangelical voices, which have served to bring stories that may not be so well known, but which are fundamental to understand the complexity of today’s world and the relevance of the gospel message in different contexts.
Jonatán also dedicated several articles to the issue of creation care, a subject he has tackled from a biblical perspective in his academic research for his final degree project in Theology, which will soon be published in a book.
Another of his passions is cinema and online tv series, which he has examined from an original and very personal perspective. He will continue to collaborate in that column in the future.
Pedro Tarquis, general director of Areópago Protestante: “God sends angels, and sometimes we are not aware of them. Some remain, and there are those who have been with us and later God has called them to another ministry. This is the case with Jonatán. All good words as a person, believer and professional will fall short. And those who are going to have him as a pastor will discover how fortunate they are to have someone like him. Our blessings, prayers and love for him will continue”.
Daniel Hofkamp, director of Protestante Digital: “It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with Jonatán Soriano on a daily basis. Despite being 1,000 kilometres apart, the daily contact has made it possible to develop a friendship that I am sure will last. Jonatán has been a great colleague and an example in his work and dedication, as well as in the transition he has made in these months to take on the pastorate and leave his daily journalistic work. I thank God for his life, work and ministry, and I am sure that what we ‘lose’ in our newsroom will be gained, by far, in the church of Sant Boi and hopefully in the evangelical work in our country”.
Joel Forster, director of Evangelical Focus: “Over the years, Jonatán has been a luxury for those of us who make up the newsroom. Of his journalism, I am struck by his in-depth interviews, his reports on countries we knew almost nothing about, and his theological reflections on cinema and tv. His gentle way of debating and his interest in others are ‘pearls’ in the current social moment. Gràcies per la teva amistat, Jonatan. Forward with your calling to serve God and the church in this new stage!”
Belén Díaz, editor at Protestante Digital and Evangelical Focus: “I think the readers will agree that, thanks to Jonatán’s great work, we have learned and felt closer to Christians in many parts of Africa, the Middle East and the rest of the world. In addition, we have enjoyed his interesting interviews. There are several series and films that we want to watch thanks to his reviews. But most of all, Jonatán is a very good colleague, always ready to help others and to serve the Lord. Working with him has been a blessing, and it is my prayer that it will also be a blessing for all those who will be with him in his new stage. They will be able to enjoy his friendship, humility and talent, as we have done all these years”.
